About

Scoil Mhuire is a vibrant primary school in Tullamore offering a full primary curriculum across fifteen mainstream classes together with dedicated provision for early‑years (Suaimhneas) and special‑needs (Misneach Junior and Senior) learners. The school fosters a supportive, inclusive environment where every pupil is encouraged to develop academically, socially and creatively. Learning takes place in a mix of original 1950s classrooms and modern prefabricated extensions, providing ample space for subjects such as cookery, technology and the arts. The campus includes a large Assembly Hall, heated cloakrooms, well‑equipped staff and storage rooms, and a range of specialist facilities accessed through the school’s activities programme. Scoil Mhuire places a strong emphasis on community engagement and extracurricular development, with active clubs and programmes in sport, green‑school initiatives, technology and cultural events such as Seachtain na Gaeilge. Regular updates are shared via social media, keeping families informed of school life and events.

History

The origins of Scoil Mhuire date to the mid‑1950s when Rev. Dr. W. Moran, parish priest, secured a site on Cormac Street and began fundraising in 1953. Construction of the school ran from 1955 to 1957, with the architect J. Boyd Barrett and contractor J.J. Smyth leading the project. The National Board of Works funded five‑sixths of the £75,000 cost, with the parish covering the remainder. The original building featured ten large classrooms, a cookery room, heated cloakrooms, toilets, an office, storerooms, a staff room and a spacious Assembly Hall. Scoil Mhuire opened its doors on 1 April 1957 and has since expanded with prefabricated units to accommodate growing enrolment, while retaining the core historic structure.
