About
Scoil Béal Átha Grean (Ballyagran National School) is a vibrant rural primary school situated in the village of Ballyagran, Kilmallock, Co. Limerick, nestled beneath Castletown Hill and serving the surrounding townlands of Colmanswell and Killacolla. The school’s ethos centres on providing a fun, caring and inclusive learning environment where each child can progress at their own pace. A strong emphasis is placed on fostering a positive culture of teaching and learning, encouraging independence, respect for difference and the development of both academic and social skills. The curriculum is broad and balanced, covering Irish, English, Maths, Religion, History, Geography, Science, Art, Drama, Music, Physical Education and SPHE (Social, Personal and Health Education). Facilities have expanded over the years to include a dedicated early‑years room (Seomra Bhríd), a specialist ASD unit called “An Cuan”, and a modern extension that supports a range of classroom activities. Free school transport is provided for pupils living beyond three miles or in the catchment areas of the former constituent schools, reinforcing the school’s commitment to accessibility. Co‑curricular life is enriched by regular events such as Engineers Week, Green Schools projects, World Down Syndrome Day celebrations and Active Schools Week, reflecting a holistic approach that values community involvement, environmental awareness and the wellbeing of every pupil.
History
Scoil Béal Átha Grean was officially opened on 1 July 1974 following the amalgamation of four parish primary schools – Ballyagran, Castletown, Colmans Well and Killacolla. From its inception a free transport system was established for children living in the wider catchment area, a service that continues today. The school experienced rapid growth in the early 1990s, with enrolments exceeding 200 pupils, before stabilising at around 100 pupils in recent years. Significant developments include the creation of Seomra Bhríd in 2015, the addition of the ASD unit “An Cuan”, and the construction of a new building funded by community fundraising and a long‑running lotto, all of which have enhanced the school’s capacity and facilities.
