About

Scoil Bhríde is a Presentation Convent primary school serving approximately 191 pupils in the coastal village of Crosshaven, County Cork. Set on a scenic site overlooking the mouth of the Owenabue River, Crosshaven Bay and Cork Harbour, the environment inspires a strong connection with the sea and the surrounding community. The school pursues academic excellence while placing equal emphasis on a broad range of extra‑curricular activities, including creative, play‑based learning, a new climbing wall, swimming, and music programmes, fostering well‑rounded development. The ethos of the school centres on exuberance, good communication and integrity, creating a safe, caring and inclusive atmosphere where each child is encouraged to grow independently and happily. Recent professional development in ADHD awareness demonstrates a commitment to meeting diverse learning needs, ensuring that every pupil receives the support required to thrive. The school’s approach blends traditional values with modern, child‑centred pedagogy, promoting curiosity, readiness to learn and a sense of belonging within a vibrant village community.

History

The school’s origins date to 28 November 1876 when the Presentation Sisters rented three houses in Westbourne Terrace near the Coastguard Station, establishing a temporary convent and primary school. Within a year, 64 girls were enrolled, and numbers quickly rose to 230, prompting the construction of a makeshift shed. In 1891 a purpose‑built National School was opened, serving the community until 1975 when the school relocated to its present site at Knocknagore. Ground was broken in August 1973 and the new premises officially opened in March 1975. The Presentation Sisters continued teaching alongside lay staff until the last sister retired in June 2006, leaving a lasting legacy that still shapes the school’s tradition today.
