About
St. Cremin’s National School is a rural, co‑educational primary school in Multyfarnham, County Westmeath, catering for children from Junior Infants through to 6th class. The school day begins at 9.20 am, with Junior and Senior Infants dismissed at 2.00 pm and the older classes at 3.00 pm, and includes a short morning break and a longer mid‑day break. The ethos centres on providing a welcoming, caring and safe environment that supports the holistic development of each pupil, encouraging a positive approach to learning and a strong focus on health and wellbeing. Recent building programmes have expanded the school’s capacity to nine classrooms, including three dedicated Special Education rooms and a purpose‑built library area. A new staffroom, secretary’s office and link corridors connect the original block with the newer extensions, while modular buildings added in 2025 provide additional space for Senior Infants. In January 2026 the school received NCSE sanction for two specialist autism classes, reflecting its commitment to inclusive education. With a team of nine teachers, St. Cremin’s continues to serve as a community‑centred hub, fostering strong ties with families and the wider parish.
History
In the early 1970s the Irish Minister for Education authorised the creation of centrally located schools, leading to the amalgamation of three local national schools (Ballinafid, Leney and Multyfarnham) into a new five‑classroom building at Rathganny. St. Cremin’s National School opened its doors in 1973, named after its patron saint, a nephew of St. Patrick, whose historic church and holy well lie nearby. The 1990s saw the addition of a sixth classroom and a new staffroom. A major 2019 extension added a seventh classroom, three Special Education rooms, a secretary’s office, a library and a link corridor; a further extension in February 2021 provided an eighth classroom and additional corridor space. In December 2025 three modular units were erected, allowing Senior Infants to occupy a ninth classroom for the first time. In January 2026 the school was sanctioned for two autism specialist classes, marking a further milestone in its development.
