About
Scoil Naisiunta Éanna is a small, two‑teacher primary school situated beside Monastery Quay in the coastal village of Roundstone, Co. Galway. It provides education for approximately 38 children drawn from the surrounding townlands, offering a close‑knit, community‑focused environment where each pupil receives personalised attention. The school’s curriculum is enriched by its spectacular natural setting – with panoramic views of Roundstone Bay, Errisbeg Hill and the distant Na Beanna Beola – and by a strong emphasis on outdoor learning, environmental stewardship and the appreciation of local wildlife. The grounds feature a well‑equipped playground that incorporates a variety of mature trees (cypress, elm, sycamore, oak, willow, pine and spruce), a natural rock formation and easy access to the nearby rocky seashore. These assets support a vibrant bird‑watching programme and a marine aquarium housed in the classroom, allowing pupils to observe and care for native sea life. The school’s involvement in projects such as the “Birds in Our Locality” initiative and a heritage partnership with the Galway Education Centre highlights its commitment to experiential learning and community engagement.
History
Founded by Franciscan monks from Mountbellew in 1835, the site originally housed a monastery that provided education for boys. The monastic school continued until the early 1970s, after which the institution was re‑opened as a co‑educational primary school in 1977, becoming Scoil Naisiunta Éanna. Since then it has maintained its tradition of fostering a love of learning within a setting rich in natural and cultural heritage.
