About

Scoil Naomh Fionán is a Catholic, co‑educational primary school situated in the coastal village of Nohoval, County Cork. The school serves approximately 144 pupils from Junior Infants to 6th Class and operates eight distinct classes – Butterfly, Cheetah, Ladybird, Koala, Panda, Zebra, Tiger and Lion – each providing a supportive environment for mixed‑age learning. The curriculum is complemented by a broad range of extracurricular activities, including music, sport, quizzes, arts and crafts, and a strong emphasis on digital learning and anti‑bullying initiatives for parents and children. The campus benefits from recent modernisation, featuring bright, open classrooms, a resurfaced playground with a soft‑play area for younger children, and an upgraded basketball court with new surface, hoops and perimeter fencing. Dedicated special‑needs provision is offered through the Butterfly and Cheetah classes, which cater for pupils on the autistic spectrum, ensuring inclusive education. The school’s facilities and varied programmes aim to foster both academic achievement and personal development within a caring, community‑focused setting.

History

Scoil Naomh Fionán National School originated as the single‑room Rennies Old National School, built in 1846‑47 in the townland of Ballinalougha and opened in September 1847. It operated until its closure in December 1963. A new school was erected on land donated by George and Rebecca Jagoe in Ballindeasig; the foundation stone was laid in 1962 and the school opened in January 1964, initially offering two modern classrooms, indoor toilets and a larger playground. Over the following decades the school expanded with a prefabricated classroom (c. 1967/68), additional teachers, and various building projects. Grants in 2011/12 added two new classrooms and refurbished the original building. In 2015 a Special Class for autistic spectrum disorder opened in September 2016, followed by the Butterfly Class (2016) and the Cheetah Class (2017). Recent improvements include a resurfaced yard, a soft‑play area, and a fully upgraded basketball court.
