About
Glenahulla National School is a vibrant primary school situated in the townland of Cloughleafin, between Mitchelstown and Kildorrery in County Cork. The school serves the three neighbouring parishes of Mitchelstown, Kildorrery and Glanworth/Ballindangan and currently enrols 89 pupils across four mainstream classes. Its educational ethos promotes the full and harmonious development of each child – intellectually, physically, culturally, morally and spiritually – within a welcoming, safe, caring and inclusive environment. The campus was completely rebuilt in 2004 and further extended in 2019, providing modern facilities that include four spacious mainstream classrooms, two Special Educational Needs (SET) rooms, a multipurpose hall (halla), a dedicated sensory room and courtyard, and a large outdoor play area. Additional support is available through two resource teachers, a Learning Support teacher and several Special Needs Assistants, ensuring that pupils with diverse needs receive appropriate assistance. The school’s uniform policy and structured school hours contribute to a disciplined yet nurturing atmosphere that encourages both academic achievement and personal growth.
History
The school’s origins date to the early 1880s when local farmer Michael O’Doherty donated a site in Cloughleafin to the Mitchelstown parish. Glenahulla National School was formally established in 1884 and opened its doors on 7 January 1885 in a two‑room building. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, extensive improvements were made with the support of a proactive Parents’ Association, including the addition of tarmac, indoor toilets, a new roof and an extra teachers’ room. In 1997 a new principal oversaw the construction of a modern school building; the old structure was closed in 1999 and teaching continued in temporary porta‑cabins. After a temporary relocation to the former Gortroe NS site (2001‑2003), the present purpose‑built school was completed and occupied in March 2004. Today the school continues to grow, maintaining a strong community spirit and a commitment to high‑quality education.
