About

Inch National School is a vibrant rural primary school situated just north of Killeagh village in East Cork. Set on approximately 13,605 m² of spacious grounds, the school offers ample room for learning, play and personal development. Its extensive outdoor facilities include a football field, an all‑weather pitch, a walking track, a combined basketball/tennis court and a ball wall, providing a wide range of sporting opportunities for pupils of all ages. The school follows a comprehensive, hands‑on curriculum that embraces language, science, mathematics and the arts, encouraging experiential learning to spark curiosity and foster critical thinking. Inclusive education is a core principle, with mainstream classes and a dedicated autism class, as well as a free hot meals programme and the Sherpa Kids before‑and‑after‑school childcare service, supporting families and promoting wellbeing within the community.

History

Education in Inch dates back to 1816, with the first recorded school located at the corner of a field. The original school building, erected in 1840, served the community until the present Inch National School opened in 1963 as a two‑teacher institution. Significant expansions followed: two new wings in 1973, the amalgamation with Kilcounty National School in 1976, and a major 2005 extension adding a computer room, library/learning support space and wheelchair‑accessible features. A basketball court was added in 2006 and interactive whiteboards introduced in 2008. Further classroom construction occurred in 2009, a Green Flag was achieved in 2012, and an additional classroom was built in 2017 to accommodate growing enrolment. Leadership milestones include the retirement of the founding principal in 1996, a subsequent change of headship in 2022, and the appointment of the current principal thereafter.
