About

Scoil Náisiúnta Naomh Eoin Baiste, The Neale is a rural, co‑educational primary school serving the village of The Neale in south County Mayo, about five kilometres from Ballinrobe. The school is part of the Cong, Cross, The Neale Parish in the Archdiocese of Tuam and currently educates 143 pupils with a team of six mainstream teachers and two specialist support teachers. Set on a large, well‑maintained site, the grounds feature mature gardens, mature trees and an all‑weather Astro‑turf playing pitch added in 2016, providing ample space for both indoor and outdoor learning and recreation. The school’s ethos is rooted in Catholic values while remaining inclusive of children of all faiths and none. It aims to provide a well‑ordered, caring and secure environment that nurtures the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural development of each pupil. A broad, stimulating curriculum encourages language learning, appreciation of Irish heritage and cultural diversity, and promotes equality, environmental awareness and community involvement. Strong parental partnership is fostered through regular home‑school contact and an active Parents’ Association, and staff development is prioritised to ensure high‑quality teaching and continuous professional growth.

History

The earliest record of a school in The Neale dates to 1856, when John Dockery and his wife taught in a two‑room building patronised by Lord and Lady Kilmaine. The school closed in 1868, later re‑using a former thatched church building. Reorganisation occurred in 1876 when the new chapel freed the former chapel for exclusive school use, with Henry Sweeney recorded as principal teacher by 1877. In October 1884 a mixed four‑teacher school opened as separate boys’ and girls’ schools, the first principals being Henry Sweeney (boys) and Margaret Mulligan (girls). The two schools operated independently until 1949, when falling attendance led to their amalgamation into a three‑teacher mixed school. Further changes saw the 1971 amalgamation with Lough Mask School, a brief reduction to two teachers in 1995, and the introduction of a learning‑support teacher in 2000. By 2017 the staff comprised six mainstream teachers and two specialist support teachers, with enrolment standing at 143 pupils (September 2023). The present school building was constructed between October 1984 and September 1985, extended in 2010, and the all‑weather Astro pitch was added in 2016.
