About
Boyle Parochial National School is a small, two‑classroom primary school located in the centre of Boyle town, close to the local library and playing fields. It provides inclusive education for children aged 4 to 12, offering a safe and positive learning environment where confidence, character and compassion are nurtured. The school follows a challenging curriculum that places emphasis on individual attention and personal growth, with a daily timetable that runs from 9.10 am for infants (until 1.50 pm) and for 1st‑6th classes until 2.50 pm. Modern digital provision is a key feature of the school. Through the Department of Education’s School Broadband Programme and a 2021 grant under the Irish National Recovery and Resilience Plan, the school is equipped with high‑speed broadband and a set of iPads that support classroom activities and help bridge the digital divide. Dedicated computer‑skills lessons complement a broad co‑curricular programme that includes swimming, GAA and basketball training, artist‑in‑residence projects and participation in community initiatives such as the Credit Union “GREEN” programme. The school’s motto, “Learning for Life” (Irish: *Foghlaim ar feadh an tsaoil*), reflects its commitment to lifelong learning.
History
The present building, identified on the 1837 Ordnance Survey map as a Chapel of Ease and infant school, has housed Boyle Parochial National School since 1940, after earlier use in the Clews Memorial Hall and Abbeytown. Owned by the Church of Ireland Representative Body, the premises have also served as a parish hall and, during summer, as an exhibition space for the Boyle Arts Festival. Initially a one‑teacher school, a second teacher was appointed in the 1960s following an amalgamation with the Church of Ireland School in Carrick on Shannon; the school reverted to a single teacher in 1970, and a second teacher was reinstated in September 1999, a structure that continues today.
