About

Scoil Náisiúnta Thuar Mhic Éadaigh is a Gaeltacht primary school situated in Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, County Mayo. Irish is the language of teaching and communication, and the school follows a Catholic ethos, aiming to provide a high‑quality, child‑centred education that nurtures confidence, health and personal development. The curriculum is designed to meet the individual needs of each pupil, fostering a safe and happy environment where children can thrive academically, socially and spiritually. The school benefits from modern facilities following a major refurbishment in 2008‑2009. Three new classrooms and a dedicated office were added, together with a multi‑purpose room, a staff room and a storage area. A geothermal heating system was installed under the floor, improving energy efficiency and comfort. Recent expansion in 2020 provided an additional classroom to accommodate growing enrolment. The grounds have been enlarged with new land for a playground and a school garden, offering ample outdoor space for play and experiential learning. Through its emphasis on Irish language immersion, Catholic values and personalised support, Scoil Náisiúnta Thuar Mhic Éadaigh seeks to develop well‑rounded, self‑confident children who are prepared to achieve their full potential in later life.

History

The origins of the school trace back to the establishment of the National School system in 1831, when Bishop Seán Mac Éil authorised a school in Deoise Thuama. In July 1847 the bishop granted permission for a monastic and school foundation at Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, with 30 acres of land donated by the Lord Seoirse Ó Modhra. The monastery officially opened on 1 August 1848, initially providing education for boys. In 1885 a small one‑room girls’ school, Scoil an Trianláir, was founded on the present site and was run by the parish until 1927, when the priests withdrew. The two schools were formally amalgamated in 1930, though the boys remained in the monastery and the girls in Scoil an Trianláir. Two additional rooms were added in 1932, and water and sewage services were introduced in 1968. In 1970 the school merged with Scoil Náisiúnta Ghleann Sál, and in 2007 it amalgamated with Scoil Náisiúnta an Trianláir, adopting the present name Scoil Náisiúnta Thuar Mhic Éadaigh. A comprehensive refurbishment in 2008‑2009 added three new classrooms, an office, a multi‑purpose room, a staff room, a storage area and a geothermal heating system, together with the purchase of extra land for a playground and garden. Due to increased pupil numbers, an additional classroom was added in 2020.
