About
Gaelscoil Uileog de Búrca is a co‑educational, rural primary school where Irish is the language of learning and community. Established in 1989 by a small group of local parents, the school now serves pupils from Reception to Sixth class and is funded by the Department of Education and Skills. It follows the Irish National Curriculum and is governed by a board representing the Catholic Church, parents, teachers and the wider community, with strong encouragement of parental involvement through an active Parents’ Association. The purpose‑built, state‑of‑the‑art campus, opened in 2012, sits on 2.5 acres just off the N17, minutes from Claremorris. Facilities include spacious classrooms equipped with interactive whiteboards and computers, a multi‑purpose hall for indoor sports and gatherings, and extensive outdoor play areas. The school places a high priority on health and happiness, promoting a positive, inclusive atmosphere and a range of extracurricular activities such as Gaelic games, soccer, swimming, cross‑country running, All‑Ireland Fleadh Cheoil, art and craft competitions, Junior Achievement programmes, science festivals and Irish dancing. A dedicated bus service links the school with Claremorris, Knock, Kiltimagh and surrounding areas.
History
Gaelscoil Uileog de Búrca was founded in 1989 by a small group of local parents who recognised the benefits of education through the medium of Irish. The school has grown from its modest beginnings to a seven‑teacher, purpose‑built institution opened in 2012, continuing its commitment to Irish‑language immersion and community‑focused primary education.
