About
Scoil Naomh Fionán is a vibrant primary school serving the Drung area of the Iskaheen/Upper Moville parish. The school provides a broad, balanced curriculum that integrates academic learning with a strong emphasis on personal development, digital safety, and environmental stewardship. Pupils benefit from a supportive community that promotes anti‑bullying initiatives, child‑safeguarding measures and a proactive online safety programme, ensuring a secure and inclusive learning environment. The school’s facilities include a well‑stocked library, dedicated sports areas and active participation in national programmes such as Green Schools and Active Schools, reflecting its commitment to health, wellbeing and sustainability. Recent projects, like the Primary Climate Ambassador scheme, encourage students to lead climate‑action awareness within the wider community. With a modest roll of just over 200 children and a growing staff team, the school maintains small class sizes that foster close teacher‑pupil relationships and encourage individual achievement across academic, sporting and cultural activities.
History
Scoil Naomh Fionán opened its doors in September 1991, amalgamating three local schools—Drung NS (established 1903), Clunelly NS (1908) and St Colm’s NS Clar (1963). The inaugural staff of eight teachers taught 207 pupils. Since then the school has expanded its team to eleven staff members and now educates approximately 208 children. It has a strong record of sporting success, receiving its second Active Schools flag in January 2014, and has been awarded seven Green Flags for its environmental initiatives, with a current flag renewal in progress.
