About

Shanagolden National School is a co‑educational, Catholic primary school serving the village of Shanagolden and its surrounding rural community. The school’s ethos is built around providing a well‑ordered, caring, happy and secure environment in which the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural needs of pupils are identified and nurtured. While rooted in a Catholic tradition, the school recognises and respects all other religions and actively promotes gender equity, parental involvement and the professional development of its staff. The curriculum is delivered across six broad subject areas – Language (Irish and English), Mathematics, Social, Environmental and Scientific Education, Art Education, Physical Education and Social, Personal and Health Education – ensuring a balanced and holistic education. Facilities include a purpose‑built hall, eight classrooms, and the premises also house the independently run Stepping Stones Montessori. The school employs five mainstream class teachers, three full‑time special‑education teachers, three special‑needs assistants, as well as part‑time administrative and caretaker support (2020). The school’s motto, *Mol an Óige Dóchas* (“Praise the Youth, Hope”), reflects its commitment to fostering confidence, respect and responsibility in every learner, while encouraging the use of the Irish language in daily life.

History

The origins of education in Shanagolden date back to the 1830s when the National Education system was introduced, replacing fee‑paying hedge schools that existed in 1835. An original school building opened in March 1844, offering English literacy, arithmetic, needlework and geography, and initially accommodated separate sections for senior boys, girls, infants and staff quarters. Enrollment peaked at 371 pupils in 1845 but fell to 193 after the Great Famine. The old school operated until 1943, when it closed and a new school was opened on a site at Clashganiff, provided free by Thomas Madigan of Clashganiff House. The new building began with five classrooms and was expanded to eight classrooms and a purpose hall in the 1980s. Following the 1968 closure of Nutgrove National School, Shanagolden NS amalgamated its boys’ and girls’ schools into a single co‑educational institution under one principal. Today the school serves Junior Infants to Sixth Class, is under the patronage of the Bishop of Limerick, and also hosts the Stepping Stones Montessori.
