About
St John the Baptist National School is a co‑educational primary school under the patronage of the Church of Ireland, situated in Midleton, East Cork. The school serves around 215 pupils and employs a team of professional staff who deliver the Irish National Curriculum to a high standard. Its ethos, encapsulated in the motto “Together, to Learn and Achieve”, promotes an inclusive and respectful environment where every child is encouraged to reach their full potential. Core teaching initiatives such as Literacy Lift‑Off and Mata sa Rang support literacy development, while a strong emphasis on technology sees each classroom equipped with laptops, iPads and a 3‑D printer, all backed by high‑speed broadband provided through the Department of Education’s School Broadband Programme. The school offers a broad range of extra‑curricular activities that enrich the pupil experience. Weekly drama and choir sessions, a vibrant art and craft programme, and regular visits from specialist teachers broaden creative learning. Sporting opportunities are extensive, with access to nearby astroturf pitches, swimming pools and playing fields, and coaching in hockey, tag rugby, soccer, athletics and swimming often delivered by parents and volunteers. A well‑maintained school garden provides outdoor learning space, and recent initiatives such as the Green School programme, Junior Entrepreneur, Young Scientist and Seachtain na Gaeilge demonstrate a commitment to environmental awareness and national competitions. Strong links with the local community are fostered through collaborations with Midleton GAA, the town library, and regular church services and assemblies.
History
St John the Baptist National School was founded in 1880, originally operating as Midleton National School on Church Lane. In 1980 the school relocated to its present site on Connolly Street. Major renovations were undertaken in 2012, and on 22 November 2013 a new six‑classroom extension was officially opened, increasing the total number of classrooms to eight. Since then the school has continued to develop its facilities and programmes, embracing modern technology, green initiatives and a wide variety of extracurricular activities.
