About
St Joseph’s C.B.S. is a co‑educational secondary school in Drogheda, County Louth, operating under the trusteeship of the Edmund Rice Schools Trust. The school positions itself as a modern centre for teaching and learning, offering a tailored educational experience that seeks to maximise each pupil’s potential. A strong emphasis is placed on pastoral care, a safe and respectful environment, and close partnership with parents to support the holistic development of students. Academic provision spans the full range of post‑primary programmes, including the Junior Cycle, Level 2 Leaving Certificate (L2LP), Transition Year, the traditional Leaving Certificate, the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme and the Leaving Certificate Applied, with a wide selection of optional subjects that allow learners to shape their own pathways. The campus combines historic roots with contemporary facilities. The original school, founded by the Christian Brothers in 1858, moved to its present Newfoundwell site in 1990 and was expanded with the state‑of‑the‑art Whitaker extension in 2015. Recent investment includes a €2.5 million extension to enhance provisions for students with autism, following the opening of a fourth autism support class in 2023. An extensive extra‑curricular programme, ranging from sports to cultural and community activities, encourages students to develop teamwork, confidence and a sense of belonging beyond the classroom.
History
The Christian Brothers first opened a school in Drogheda in 1858. In 1990 the school relocated from Sunday’s Gate to its current Newfoundwell campus. A major development, the Whitaker extension, was added in 2015, providing modern learning spaces. Ongoing enhancements, such as the recent autism support expansion, continue the school’s tradition of adapting its facilities to meet contemporary educational needs.
