About

St Mary’s Convent National School is a Catholic‑ethos primary school situated in the heart of Trim, County Meath. It welcomes children of all denominations and provides mixed education from Junior Infants to First Class, with girls continuing from Second to Sixth Class. The school places a strong emphasis on inclusive learning, offering four specialist classes that support pupils with speech and language needs, mild learning difficulties and autism, the latest of which opened in September 2024. The campus has been continually modernised. A major extension completed in 2010 added new classrooms, resource rooms, a library, a state‑of‑the‑art computer suite and a 300‑seat school hall. Subsequent extensions in 2013 and 2021 provided additional mainstream classrooms, bringing the total enrolment to over 550 pupils. The school also promotes community engagement and sustainability, with activities such as visits to local care homes, climate‑action projects and participation in Catholic Schools Week.

History

St Mary’s Convent Primary School was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1868 with 30 children in what is now St Patrick’s Hall. A new building opened in 1924, followed by further extensions including an Assembly Hall. The present primary school was constructed in 1978, refurbished in 2001‑2002, and expanded in 2010, 2013, 2021 and 2023. In late 2023 a new principal was appointed, and in September 2024 a dedicated autism class was introduced. Today the school educates more than 550 children, continuing the legacy of the Mercy Sisters.
