About
St. Peter’s National School, Snugboro is a co‑educational Catholic primary school situated just under three kilometres from Castlebar in County Mayo. The school welcomes children of the Catholic faith while also accepting pupils of other denominations and those with no religious affiliation, fostering an inclusive community that respects diverse beliefs. Its educational ethos centres on creating a happy, secure environment that promotes a positive learning culture, encouraging self‑discipline, good behaviour and the development of each child’s potential through curiosity, creativity and active engagement across the curriculum. The campus offers extensive outdoor and practical facilities. Pupils benefit from a spacious “old pitch” for football, a basketball court, sheltered play areas and a large playground that includes a “Daily Mile” track encircling a big pitch. A well‑maintained school garden and polytunnel provide hands‑on experiences in horticulture. In 2021 the school received a grant under the Irish National Recovery and Resilience Plan, enabling the purchase of digital equipment to bridge the digital divide and support learners at risk of educational disadvantage. Strong partnerships with parents, the Board of Management and the Parents Association further enrich the school community.
History
The history of education in the Snugboro/Carrowbrinoge area dates back to the mid‑nineteenth century, when a travelling teacher provided instruction to local children at the rear of the present‑day McGough’s house and, in winter, in McGough’s barn. The teacher was paid in cash as well as in vegetables and poultry, and families took turns hosting him, laying the foundations for formal schooling in the locality.
