About

St Pius X Boys’ National School is a Catholic primary school situated in Fortfield Park, Terenure, serving the Templeogue community. The school provides a positive, inclusive and affirmative environment that blends Christian values with a welcoming attitude to children of all belief systems. Its ethos stresses mutual respect, partnership between home, school and the wider community, and a commitment to nurturing each boy’s individual talents through high standards of behaviour and academic achievement. The school operates a modern, progressive centre of education with 32 full‑time teachers, 11 Special Needs Assistants, and dedicated support staff. Recent building programmes (2006, 2008 and 2019) have expanded classrooms and support rooms, creating well‑equipped learning spaces for a broad curriculum that includes strong programmes in the arts, music, and sport. A long‑standing emphasis on physical education, music, and extracurricular activities such as GAA, swimming, tennis and school productions underpins a holistic approach that aims to develop resilient young men equipped for future challenges.

History

St Pius X Primary schools were founded in 1965, initially occupying six prefabricated classrooms on land leased from St Mary’s rugby club adjacent to the parish church. The boys’ school opened on 15 February 1965 with 117 pupils. In January 1971 the permanent school buildings at Fortfield Park were officially opened and blessed, providing 16 classrooms each for the boys’ and girls’ schools and accommodating 1 130 children taught by 28 teachers. Governance by a Board of Management began in 1975. Notable milestones include a presidential visit by Mary McAleese in 2005 and the celebration of the school’s 50th anniversary in 2015, during which a commemorative book was produced and a tricolour presented by the Defence Forces. Ongoing development has seen further classroom extensions in 2006, 2008 and 2019, supporting a contemporary educational environment.
