About

Stanhope Street Primary School is a warm, welcoming primary school situated in the heart of Dublin 7. Since September 2022 the school has operated as a fully co‑educational, vertically‑structured institution, catering for over 370 pupils from Junior Infants through to Sixth Class. The school’s ethos promotes a caring, holistic approach to education, encouraging each child to develop confidence, self‑esteem and a love of learning within a safe, happy environment. The campus boasts state‑of‑the‑art facilities designed to support a broad curriculum and diverse learning needs. There are 18 spacious classrooms equipped with interactive whiteboards and computer stations, eight dedicated learning‑support rooms, a fully‑fitted computer suite, a colourful library, a music room with a range of instruments, and specialised spaces such as a parents’ room and a Home‑School Liaison Office. Communal areas include a purpose‑built hall for assemblies, PE, yoga and GAA, an expansive performance hall with stage, two outdoor basketball courts, and a newly‑developed courtyard and soft‑surface yard that provide safe outdoor learning and exercise spaces. All areas are wheelchair‑accessible, with lifts and wide corridors throughout the three‑storey building.

History

The school was founded by the Religious Sisters of Charity on 2 October 1867 and is located on Manor Street in the Parish of the Holy Family, Aughrim Street, Dublin 7. Mary Aikenhead, founder of the Congregation, lived in the original convent on Stanhope Street from 1819 to 1826. The original 1867 building was demolished in March 2010; construction of the new three‑storey school began on 1 May 2013 and the doors opened to pupils and staff on 1 September 2014. The school was officially blessed by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin on 5 June 2015 and opened by former pupil Joan Burton TD. In September 2022 the school changed status to become a fully co‑educational primary school, a transition that is being implemented on a phased, vertical basis.
