About

Scoil Togala Mhuire is a vibrant primary school serving the Kiltullagh community in Athenry, County Galway. The school provides a caring and happy atmosphere where pupils’ intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural needs are identified and nurtured. Irish (Gaeilge) is used as the language of communication wherever possible, reinforcing cultural heritage while fostering confidence and self‑esteem in every child. The campus has grown considerably since its opening in 1958, now comprising several modern classrooms, a dedicated resource room, a learning‑support suite and a staff office. Recent extensions have added a stand‑alone junior infants classroom and a well‑equipped playing area with full‑size goalposts and back‑netting, supporting a robust PE programme and Gaelic games. The school also runs enrichment activities such as entrepreneurship modules with Enterprise Ireland, bodhrán music lessons and art projects, encouraging creativity and real‑world learning. With enrolments rising to 170 pupils, Scoil Togala Mhuire continues to expand its facilities and staffing to maintain small class sizes and a personalised approach, ensuring each learner is prepared for secondary education with a strong sense of responsibility and self‑worth.

History

The original Kiltullagh National School was founded in October 1856 as a single‑room thatched building. A new school opened in 1900, and in 1958 the present Scoil Togala Mhuire was established with two classrooms. Major extensions in 2005, 2011, 2015 and 2019 added further classrooms, a resource room, learning‑support facilities and a stand‑alone classroom. Enrolment reached 117 in 2014, 170 by September 2021, prompting additional staffing and the planning of two new classrooms under Project 5.
