About
Tulsk National School is a Catholic, co‑educational primary school situated in Castlerea, County Roscommon. Operating under the patronage of Bishop Kevin Doran, the school embraces a Catholic ethos while warmly welcoming pupils of all faiths, fostering an environment of genuine respect and tolerance. The curriculum is delivered within a vibrant learning community that values both academic achievement and the holistic development of each child. The school benefits from a modern, state‑of‑the‑art extension opened in 2010, which houses a dedicated Physical Education gym, a well‑equipped resource room, a staff room and contemporary indoor toilet facilities. Earlier extensions have provided spacious classrooms, a large Infants room and central heating, ensuring a comfortable and adaptable learning environment. A strong emphasis on active learning is evident through participation in programmes such as the Green Schools initiative, Active Schools Week and a variety of cultural and extracurricular activities that enrich pupils’ experiences beyond the classroom.
History
Tulsk National School opened its doors on 21 February 1911 under Master Michael Shannon, with 51 pupils enrolled. In 1965 the nearby Rathnagly School was amalgamated with Tulsk. A major renovation in 1968 replaced a folding partition with a solid wall, added separate toilet blocks for boys and girls and created an open yard. A further extension in 1995 introduced a large Infants room, a new classroom, central heating and indoor toilets; it was officially opened on 6 March 1996 by Bishop Christopher Jones. Responding to increased enrolment, a state‑of‑the‑art building was added in 2009, featuring a new classroom, PE gym, resource room, staff room and modern toilets, and was opened on 25 May 2010 by Bishop C. Jones. The school today is celebrated for its vibrant learning community and long‑standing tradition of education.
