About
Whitechurch National School is a co‑educational, Catholic primary school situated in the parish of Ballinameela. Recent investment in refurbishment, extension and information‑and‑communication technology has created a spacious, modern and bright learning environment equipped with the latest classroom technology. The school offers a secure and happy setting where pupils benefit from a wide range of educational projects and initiatives that promote both academic and personal development. The school enjoys extensive facilities, including a community pitch, a sports hall, a well‑stocked library and up‑to‑date IT resources. Extra‑curricular programmes encompass gymnastics, athletics, drama, GAA, modern foreign language studies, Junior Entrepreneur activities, Green Schools projects and Science Foundation of Ireland awards. Recent additions such as a GP hall, a dedicated SET (Special Educational Needs and Talent) room and extra classrooms further enhance the school’s capacity to support diverse learning needs.
History
The original school was built in the 1870s, with the present building erected in 1956 containing two classrooms while the older structure served as a multipurpose hall. A prefab was added in the late 1960s and the old school was closed. In the 1970s another prefab was installed following the amalgamation with Killeshal NS. The 1991 extension introduced the current 3rd‑4th and 5th‑6th classrooms, and the prefabs were removed. A 2005 renovation added a GP hall and secretary’s office, and in 2007 a further classroom and a SET room were constructed, giving the school its present layout.
